Artha Global in partnership with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), organised a National Workshop on Clean Air Zones (CAZ) in Visakhapatnam on Nov 2, 2023. The event was attended by members from government, academia, industry and civil society. Transport for London (TfL) was a key knowledge partner in the workshop.
About the event
Artha Global convened a National Workshop on Clean Air Zones in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board and Transport for London. This National Workshop aims to raise awareness about CAZs and formulate pathways to successful implementation by convening the support of government officials from all relevant departments and agencies, urban air quality experts, and policy think tanks. Over the past few years, multiple cities have piloted different CAZ approaches, with varying degrees of success. The Workshop provided a platform to hear from senior city/state leadership that have implemented CAZs in their geographies on key success factors for CAZ implementation.
A number of think-tanks have been working on different issues related to CAZs. These include issues on regulation, technology, data, finance, communications, and stakeholder engagement. The Workshop brought together leading think-tanks to share their views on key strategies and levers for CAZ implementation.
About the participating organisations

Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board: The state of Andhra Pradesh has shown remarkable progress in addressing the issue of urban emissions. It has done so by installing multiple state of the art air quality monitoring stations across the non-attainment cities, as well as carrying out Source Apportionment and Emission Inventory studies that list specific time-bound recommendations on addressing urban air quality. The National Workshop is being co-organised with APPCB, and will showcase initiatives by APPCB, as well as Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to mitigate urban air pollution.
Transport for London: Over the last two decades, Transport for London (TfL) has emerged as a global leader in reducing transport emissions through the implementation of Clean Air Zones. Since 2003, TfL has successfully implemented several initiatives like Low Emission Zones (LEZ), Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ), congestion taxation, Safer Neighbourhood Programmes, Healthy Street Programmes and continuous ‘hyper-local emissions monitoring’. TfL is a key partner for this workshop, and will share key takeaways from their two-decade experience in combating air pollution.
