The Centre for Emerging Cities works on the unique challenges of urbanisation in the developing world, with a particular focus on India and the African continent.
About the Centre
Every year, millions move to cities across India and the developing world, aspiring to a better life. After all, cities are at the centre of economic progress. From Bangalore to Silicon Valley, cities are labour markets, matching people who move in search of opportunity with businesses in search of strong talent pools. But how should developing country cities navigate the challenges of migration and rapid urbanisation to plan and manage the productive, low-carbon and accessible cities of tomorrow? The Artha Centre for Emerging Cities was established as a solutions lab for cities in the developing world, connecting the best Indian and global expertise with local governments. Through empirical research, on-ground implementation support and capacity building, the Centre helps state and local governments tackle the big urban challenges from affordable housing, to managing heat stress and air pollution to planning ahead for urban growth.
This study uses insights from citizen perception surveys about our proposed Clean Air Zone measures in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada to develop a recommended CAZ implementation plan.
The forthcoming phase of CAZ implementation will include area improvement projects that include optimising parking arrangements and novel nature-based solutions like permeable pavements and Miyawaki forests at junctions.
In support of these efforts, GVMC and Artha launched their collaboration through a series of comprehensive training workshops focused on the Cities and Public Health module.
