The DPI Academy | Enabling Digital Transformation in India

Artha Global and eGovernments Foundation have set up a DPI Academy, a global centre for building capacities and advancing knowledge on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

January 14, 2025

Context

Technology is now a key tool for governments, but with its relentless pace of evolution, often needs structural support to enable smooth transitions.

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) can enable governments to provide public services, mobilise tax revenues, and ensure reliable data on development indicators in efficient, rapidly scalable, and resilient ways. However, countries often face capacity limitations, impacting their ability to design, execute, maintain, monitor, and evaluate progress on these projects. This leads to more expensive, less effective and unsustainable DPI implementation.

To bridge this crucial capacity gap in building DPI, Artha Global and eGovernments Foundation have collaborated to set up a DPI Academy. We build capacity and catalyse communities of practice in government and other relevant stakeholders.

From conceptualisation to implementation, we provide the necessary structural support to enable all stakeholders to successfully and sustainably integrate DPI into their larger infrastructure.

Visit the DPI Academy website here.

Methodology

In its initial two years, the DPI Academy’s work spans across three pillars:

  1. Capacity-building for government and public institution stakeholders, in collaboration with academic partners, to enhance their capacity to design, establish and leverage DPI to drive policy and developmental outcomes. This will seed a network of leaders in government and public institutions who can harness DPI thinking to transform their sectors, while also building a global community that catalyses innovation across borders
  2. Under our knowledge pillar, we will develop a body of work that examines the impact, governance and sustainability of DPI. This includes a flagship report on the state of DPIs in India, case studies, and collaborative discussions that offer critical and timely insight into this field.
  3. Our community pillar will focus on building a vibrant DPI community that brings together experts, builders, practitioners, and champions within government. Our goal is to facilitate and curate events that foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation across the digital public infrastructure (DPI) space.

Outcomes

We envision the Academy as the first in a global network of knowledge and capacity-building hubs committed to transforming  the international community into one that can sustain progress towards DPIs.
Relevant learnings curated and generated from its work in India and globally will be used across an international network. Over a 5-year period, this network’s alumni will ideally be trained and well-positioned to champion digital transformation initiatives worldwide, with the network itself acting as a platform for such cooperation.

UPI’s Role in Financial Inclusion for India’s Next Half Billion

Without meaningful efforts to improve trust in Digital Financial Services (DFS) among the Next Half Billion (NHB), adoption may remain limited, preventing them from fully benefiting from financial inclusion.

Opinion | DPI integration with AI will elevate the quality of public services as well as risks

In this article for Mint, Lakshay Naranag, Senior Associate at Artha Global, argues that there are clear benefits in using artificial intelligence (AI) tools with India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI). Such integration is already underway. But its gains must be weighed against drawbacks. Read the article here. Banner Image Source: Unsplash
