“Deshpande is a creative writer, Barbosa an anthropologist. She is the grand-daughter of their protagonist, he has done his PhD on Irawati. The book thus moves between the personal and the scientific, and the writers skilfully avoid jarring the reader with the resultant shifts in narrative and style. Some of the passages on her personal life in particular are beautifully written.”
