Survey | How do Indians Use UPI?

Nationwide rapid survey was conducted with 2,098 respondents to examine the usage patterns of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India.

January 31, 2025

Context

As digital payment systems gain traction in India, understanding how and where UPI is used becomes crucial for businesses, policymakers, and financial institutions. This survey provides insights into consumer usage patterns and the penetration of UPI in various transactional scenarios.

Methodology

The rapid survey covered 2,098 respondents across India covering proportion of respondents using UPI, reasons for using and setting in which it is most used.

Outcomes

Our results show that more than two in three Indians use digital payments.

  • The nature of use of UPI among genders were similar: 62% of men and 59% of women use UPI for transactions with local merchants.
  • 15% of UPI users used it for online shopping, 17% for money transfers to friends and family, and 6% for paying bills. Sending money to friends and family was more popular among women than among men.

Nearly one-third of the respondents do not use UPI. Of these, almost 70% resided in rural areas, 20% in semi-urban areas, and 10% in urban areas.
